RISING Uganda, a project aimed at supporting the most vulnerable out-of-school children has this morning laid the foundation for the new construction or refurbishment of up to 67 classrooms and 53 improved WASH facilities across nine districts, valued in total at over 3 billion shillings. The occasion was marked by the laying of a foundation stone by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, the Hon. Janet K. Museveni, represented by Minister of State for Health in Charge of Primary Health Care - Hon. Margaret Muhanga; at Buteme Light Primary School in Kamuli district.

In partnership with Education Above All Foundation's Educate A Child program, the four-year education project (2022-2025) delivered by Plan International and Strømme Foundation aims to reach 100,000 children, particularly girls, who are most at risk of never returning to school. All nine districts where this project has interventions will benefit from this initiative, including Yumbe, Obongi, Adjumani, Buyende, Kamuli, Alebtong, Lira, Nebbi, and Madi Okollo.

Speaking at the event, Carron Beaumont - Head of Program Implementation at Plan International Uganda highlighted the need to break down barriers that threaten children’s access to quality and inclusive education and to make deliberate actions to ensure that every child has the opportunity to return to class, particularly those in marginalized and refugee communities.

Investing in basic school infrastructure is crucial for better learning outcomes, especially at this time where enrolment into education is needed for millions of children who have been affected by ongoing and past conflicts as well as crises and gender inequalities. We hope that this initiative will go a long way to strengthen children’s access and retention into school for both boys and girls,” said Beaumont.

The Ministry of Education and Sports continues to guide the implementation of this project and to support children’s access to education through various initiatives, including putting in place policies that can support the enrolment and retention of vulnerable children in school.
